Blue Jackets Mason Gets 1st Shutout Against Panthers

Columbus Blue Jackets' netminder Steve Mason won the Calder Trophy last year as the NHL's Rookie of the Year after compiling 10 shutouts. He looks like he is finally rounding into form after blanking the Florida Panthers 3-0 last night for Mason's 1st shutout victory this season. The loss was Florida's 4th straight and 9th in the team's last 10 games.

The Blue Jackets got on the score sheet late in the 1st period as left winger Jason Chimera knocked in his own rebound past Florida'a Tomas Vokoun at 18:19. Columbus added to their lead late in the 3rd when Derick Brassard lifted a shot over Vokoun's shoulder with 5:50 left in regulation. Sammy Pahlsson added an empty net goal off a center ice faceoff at 18:32 to seal the win.

Columbus next faces the Predators in Nashville on Thursday night, while Florida is heading to New Jersey to play the Devils on Friday.
