Sens Over Ducks In 4-3 Shootout Dec 6th
The Ottawa Senators broke a four game losing streak with a 4-3 shoot out victory over the Anaheim Ducks. Ottawa is probably happy that this road trip is over as the Sens got only 3 points out of a possible 10 in their last 5 games. This was actually only the first road win for Ottawa in their last 8 games on the road. Anaheim meanwhile is winless in their last 5 games, going 0-4-1 over that stetch.
Left winger Jarkko Ruutu put the Senators up 1-0 with his 5th goal 12:01 into the 1st period, beating Ducks goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere with an unassisted goal snapping up Anaheim defenseman James Wisniewski's pass from behind the Ducks' net and slipping a backhand past Giguere. Anaheim got that one back 15 seconds later on a flukey goal by Ryan Getzlaf. Getzlaf was simply shooting the puck into the Senators end along the boards when the puck hit the glass, rebounding into the Ottawa net while Brian Elliott was moving out of his net to play the puck. A weak, weak goal allowed by Elliott.
Jason Spezza got Ottawa back into the lead with a power play goal with Anaheim winger Joffrey Lupul off for cross checking, but Lupul made up for that by tying the game 2-2 with his 9th, 31 seconds later. There was no scoring in the 2nd period.
Ottawa defenseman Filip Kuba once again put the Senators in the lead, scoring his 3rd of the season putting the puck past Giguere from the slot, but the Ducks again responded with an immediate goal of their own. Corey Perry crossed into the Ottawa zone, moved into the slot and lifted a backhand past Elliott's glove.
Anaheim pressed in the 3rd, doubling up the Senators in shots 12-6, but couldn't get the winner. Overtime as usual solved nothing, so off to the shootout.
Corey Perry ANA Miss
Alexei Kovalev OTT Goal
Ryan Getzlaf ANA Goal
Daniel Alfredsson OTT Goal
Joffrey Lupul ANA Miss
Both Alexei Kovalev and Ryan Getzlaf traded shoot out goals after Corey Perry missed on his chance. Ottawa captain Daniel Alfredsson beat Giguere and that goal stood up when Lupul missed the net in his chance to prolong the game.
Both teams are off until Tuesday, when Ottawa hosts the Montreal Canadiens and the Dallas Stars head to Anaheim.
