Sens' Elliott Shuts Out Struggling Flyers 2-0

It was a goaltendering duel up until the 3rd period when the Ottawa Senators scored two goals to beat the Philadelphia Flyers. The Flyers have now lost 6 of their last 7 games, going 1-2-0 since replacing their head coach with Peter Laviolette. Ottawa hasn't faired much better, winning only their 2nd game in their last six. Neither teams' netminders were particularly busy with the Senators outshooting the Flyers 25-23, but Ottawa goalie Brian Elliott came away with the shutout, his 1st of the season and second in 48 NHL games.

Left winger Nick Foligno was the only one to beat a goaltender this night, knocking in his own rebound past Brian Boucher at 11:31 of the 3rd. Jesse Winchester got some insurance with an unassisted empty net goal while the Senators were shorthanded.

Thw win moves Ottawa 2 points up on the Montreal Canadiens in the Northeast Division standings, but the Senators trail Boston and Buffalo. The Flyers remain tied with the New York Islanders with 29 points for dead last in the Atlantic Division.

Both teams play again on Saturday, with Ottawa at home to the Carolina Hurricanes and Philadelphia visiting the Devils in New Jersey.
