Ryan Miller Earns Shutout Win Against Ovechkin's Caps
Buffalo Sabres goalie Ryan Miller earned his 4th shutout of the season blanking Alexander Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals 3-0 last night while facing 35 shots. Miller's won/loss record improved to 17-6-2 in the 25 games he's appeared this season. The Capitals' six game winning streak was snapped as Washington was held goalless for the first time this season and Ovechkin was blanked for the first time in his last 6 games.
Sabres defenseman Steve Montador got Buffalo on the board early in the 1st period, with a long point shot that deflected in past Washington goalie Jose Theodore off Capitals' defenseman Milan Jurcina for Montador's 2nd of the season.
Rookie center Nathan Gerbe put Buffalo up 2-0 with his first ever National Hockey League goal beating Theodore shortside while coming from behind the Capitals net at 14:42 of the 2nd. Washington's defenseman Mike Green was off for high-sticking for Gerbe's goal. About 3 minutes later, defenseman Henrik Tallinder got his own rebound after a shot from the slot and snapped his 2nd of the season behind Theodore to give the Sabres the 3-0 lead that they carried into the 3rd period.
Washington outshot Buffalo 13-4 in the 3rd, but couldn't get anything past Miller and Capitals' left winger Alexander Ovechkin wasn't really noticeable in the game, going minus one, but he did get 6 shots on Miller.
The Sabres and Caps both have games on Friday, with Washington at home to the Carolina Hurricanes and Buffalo continuing their home stand against the Chicago Blackhawks.
