Blues Goalie Mason Stones Coyotes November 19th
St Louis Blues defenseman Erik Johnson scored the winner in overtime, but if his goalie Chris Mason hadn't stood on his head in the second half of game, Johnson's OT heroics wouldn't have been possible. Mason let in one goal early, Radim Vrbata scoring his 7th at 3:22 of the 1st period, and Keith Tkachuk tied it with his 4th of the year 3 minutes later.
Phoenix left winger Vernon Fiddler scored at 1:58 of the 2nd to restore the Coyotes' lead, but after that, Mason was a brick wall making save after save to keep his team in the game. It could have been a much higher score in Phoenix's favor if not for Mason's excellent play. I would not be surprised to see a couple in the saves of the week video. T.J. Oshie popped in his 3rd of the year (this was Oshie's third multi-point game this year) to tie it up 2-2 early in the 3rd period. Mason faced 13 shots from Phoenix, but the Coyotes just could not get a puck past the Blues goaltender, forcing overtime. Phoenix Coyotes goalie Ilya Bryzgalov dropped to 11-6-1 with the loss.
Johnson scored his game winner 17 seconds into the extra period completing the Blues comeback. St Louis' win propelled the team out of the basement of the Western Division past both Minnesota and Anaheim.
St Louis next faces off at home against the New York Islanders on Saturday the 21st and the Coyotes also play Saturday, hosting the Philadelphia Flyers.
