A lot of people have been wondering what was up with Alexander Ovechkin after he had scored only 2 goals so early in the young season, but he is starting to look like the Ovechkin of last year after last night's 6-5 loss against the New Jersey Devils. NHL points leader Alexander Semin was missing from the Capitals line-up for an undisclosed injury.
A great game, the Caps took a 2-1 lead when Ovechkin tipped in Tyler Sloan's shot late in the first period. The Devils came back in the second with goals by Jamie Langenbrunner and a power play goal by Patrik Elias to take a 3-2 lead, but Viktor Kozlov tied it up late in the second. In the third, the teams traded goals, with Elias getting his 2nd of the game (6th of the season). Capitals' center Nicklas Backstrom then scored at 8:11. Backstrom had a phenomenal game with 1 goal and 4 assists. He was in on every goal the Caps scored. Brian Gionta put the Devils ahread again with his 3rd goal of the season. Then Ovechkin tied it up at 5-5 with one second remaining on the clock to send it to overtime. He was standing just off to the side of the net when the puck squirted to him and he snapped in his 7th goal of the season.
OT solved nothing, so it went to the shootout. Zach Parise scored the only goal in the shootout (to go along with his 2 assists). The win by the Devils snapped Washington's 5 game win streak.
