Both the Montreal Canadiens and the Ottawa Senators are mired in slumps, so with the Boston Bruins running away with the division title, both teams were desperate for a win in order to get back in the hunt.
Ottawa's sniper Dany Heatley opened the scoring at 4:21 of the first period with a wrist shot that beat Carey Price. The Habs' captain Saku Koivu scored his 7th of the season to tie it at 13:33 of the first period. Both teams were scoreless in the second, and they exchanged third period goals with Ottawa's Nick Foligno beating Carey Price at 4:58 and then Andrei Markov lifting the Habs into a tie. OT solved nothing and they had to go to the shootout.
Alex Tanguay scored his team leading 8th goal to win it for the Canadiens. Both Tanguay and Koivu are tied with 17 points in Montreal's first 18 games. Neither player cracks the top 30 league wide in scoring although Tanguay is 29th over all in goalscoring. Surprisingly both lead the all star balloting with subpar seasons so far, but there are allegations that Montreal's rabid fans may be trying to stuff the ballot box.
